gold, where do you find it?i found it in northern ontario
while out on a canoe trip i noticed a shimmer of gold reflecting back at me. of course i didn't realise it was gold until i climbed the rock on which it stood. a sliver of gold 1/2 inch wide and 10 or so inches long. i grabbed my pocket knife and dug out a piece about the size of my thumb. i figured iron pyrite, fools gold, but after testing showed to be true gold 10 carat, i have never been able to go back and get more and i'm sure it's still there. i saw it by luck while rounding an island in northern ontario in a canoe. have you ever found valuable gems or such, by luck

Do you like to collect things, and if yes, what is it?
we are so strange.
I feel like crying today, but that would make a ninny out of me. I can always solve my own problems, get over something or someone that have hurt me. But, for some freaking stupid reason, i cannot get myself under control. Flooding seem to be near and i think everyone already has their canoes at hand. Why, should we always be so damn emotional? A sea adventure in my last vacations.
Hi friends, I usually don´t do a copy paste but I was answering a post here in mylot and I got carried away by the memories of one of the exciting adventures I had last January in my trip to Kunayala. I thought I would share it with you even if it had a lot of copy-paste.[em]lol[/em]There it goes. Last January, some friends of mine invited me to a boat trip to Kunayala, at the caribbean part of Panamá. We had a big sailboat with 4 double cabins. One of them was all for myself. When we reached Kunayala, the natives came to our boat with their canoes carved from logs. They sold us fresh fish and lobsters. We made friends over a can of beer (our present as they are not allowed to drink alcoholic beverages except at special ocations so they crave for it and beg). They were going to the same place were were headed to (a bigger island) next day. They would start their trip before 6 AM as they only had their hands and arms to row. We started about 11 AM and in the middle of the trip a storm begun with high waves. We used the motor and lowered the sails ....
Great Time over the weekend
Yesterday, a couple of friends with me went to a water park, to enjoy some water sports. We rent two of those canoes, and we paddle along the river for a couple of hours. It was my first experience, and it was absolutely fun, and a little of nervouse. Since I couldn't swim at all. When I step on the canoe, it was wobbling, and I just hope that my life jacket could save me if I fell into the water. Along the river trip, I get used to it, and feel much confident on racing with my friends. It was a great experience, and surely worth the time. It was beautiful weather, and we just enjoy to have some fun on the water. That is how we should enjoy our time during the weekend from the busy weekdays.
Subject: A Modern Parable
I received this email a few months ago, but in view of the current requests by the automakers for bailouts, it is even more applicable now!A Japanese company (TOYOTA) and an American company (GENERAL MOTORS) decided to have a canoe race on the Red River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race. On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile. The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing. Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing. Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was...
Dragon Boat Festival
5th of 5th Month of Chinese CalenderIt is in memory of a great patriot poet of the State of Chu during the warring States period (475-221 B.C.), Qu Yuan who drowned himself to protest his emperor who gave in to the bully State of Chin. To avoid the fish to consume his body, people of Chin launched their boats and threw rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves into the river where he was drowned to feed the fish. People today still eat the bamboo-leaf rice dumplings (zong zi). Teams of dragon boats, similar to long canoes, train for weeks for the contests in this day, not only in China, but also in other Asian countries with Chinese populations.
worlds most famous abandond "ghost ship" the s.s.baychimo
The s.s Baychimo was a steam powered ship built in France in 1915. and sold to an Brittish fer trading company.in 1931 while returning with a full hull of fur off the canadian coat, they became stuck in the pack ice(sea frozen around them). The winter had come early that the year.after waiting it ou a few days they were able to proceed for a further 3 hours but again thair passage closed in on them and again they become fixed in time, stuck hard in the pack ice.The captain ordered his crew of 36 to seek refuge on the ice fearing the Baychimo would break up at any moment(the ice would crush the hull).after waiting sevral weeks 27 crew members were rescued and the rest along with the captain were to build a shelter and wait for the warmth of spring to proceed. They never expected the ship to last more tha a week!one night a fearce blizzard blew in and the crew were forced inside their make shift cabin for 3 days. When they walked out side they were struck with an awsome site of snow ridges 70feet high, and the Baychimo was no were to be seen.A search was mounted and after they did not find her and as they could see anything but snow and ice for miles they came to the conclusion that...
Sharks in mythology
Sharks figure prominently in the Hawaiian mythology. There are stories of shark men who have shark jaws on their back. They could change form between shark and human at any time they desired. A common theme in the stories was that the shark men would warn beach-goers that sharks were in the waters. The beach-goers would laugh and ignore the warnings and go swimming, subsequently being eaten by the same shark man who warned them not to enter the water.Hawaiian mythology also contained many shark gods. They believed that sharks were guardians of the sea, and called them Aumakua:[38]* Kamohoali'i - The best known and revered of the shark gods, he was the older and favoured brother of Pele,[39] and helped and journeyed with her to Hawaii. He was able to take on all human and fish forms. A summit cliff on the crater of Kilauea is considered to be one of his most sacred spots. At one point he had a he'iau (temple or shrine) dedicated to him on every piece of land that jutted into the ocean on the island of Moloka'i.* Ka'ahupahau - This goddess was born human, with her defining characteristic being her red hair. She was later transformed into shark form and was believed to...
A life of chasing ships
I had been traveling to a number of cities for the past weeks. For a change, I decided to travel via boat. It was during this travel that I have seen again the Bajao. The Bajao is an indigenous & once proud tribe in my country. They are known as seagoing nomads who spend their entire life living on large outrigger canoes. They get all their needs from the seas and goes from island to island. But due to the exploitation of our natural resources, the sea could no longer sustain their lifestyle and sad to say some of them have gone to live in the land and became beggars. However, from where I come from, they have learned to live along the coastline or near the pier, wherein they get to satisfy their nomadic tendencies by making a living chasing big ships. They now use motorized ‘bangka’ or small boats to chase big ships that ply the channel everyday. They appeal to the charitable spirits of the ship’s passengers and ask the passengers to throw money at their boat. In the attached picture you could see the father manning the boat while the mother holds a rectangular sack with bamboo sticks at the sides to catch the money. In the pier also, there are Bajao children who would ask for...
