Kayaks Discussions
Dragorossi Kayaks
Any white water kayakers out there?Have you tried Dragorossi kayaks? They are expensive, but well designed. I wonder if you think they are worthe the money? They are designed by Corran Addison the former Olympian from south Africa. He's kind of an enigma himself.Take a look at dragorossi.net to check out the boats and tell me what you think.
Eskimos-Lifestyle of people about whom we have little knowledge
In mylot, the members belong from various parts of the world and more or less we have a vague idea of most of the communities. But Eskimos are people about whom we all have read in childhood and like me must have been fascinated. But i think we all know very little about them. I came across an interesting piece of information about Eskimos and would like to put it here in this post. All of your are welcome to contribute more information about Eskimos or any other rare community peoiple. Eskimos or Inuits were the orignal inhabitants of Greenland. They are short and stout and have yellowish skin.High cheek bones, and narrow eyes.they lead a very ahrd lkihe. They are mainly hunters and hubt seals, walruses, whales and polar bears. In the apst they used bows and harpoons to hunt.A harpoon is ling spear with a rope attached to it.They amake a round hole on top of a frozen river or the edge of the sea. Then they wauit fir the fish, seal etc, to come up to breathe then they pierce the animals with tha harpoon. Boats called Kayaks are used for hunting sea anumals.Thesed boats are made of seal skin. For hunting whales,a large boats called umiak,is...
So what do you consider OLD?
I see many discussions and when they talk about someone in the 60's they seem to assume that it is old. Let me reassure you it is NOT. I am 60 and still ride roller coasters and do lots of fun things. My friend at work is 70 and skiis, kayaks, hikes and so on, and shows no signs of slowing down. Oh and he also has 2 jobs.I would hope this prejudice is just from young people who do not know any better. I am not saying some people who get ill or just do not handle life well age fast. In fact I gave a few friends who were acting old when they were in their 20's. But in general people who are in their 60's ( the baby boomers) are doing quite well and are very active in life.
Never tried kayaking, but now, I want to. Help me buy the right one...
Hi all. I just attended a 4th of July Freedom Swim where I live and it was fantastic! It is a "swim" across the Peace River--which flows into the gulf of Mexico--where everyone takes boats, swimming pool toys, things to float on or whatever, to get across.A few people had kayaks and they looked they were having fun while still getting exercise. My husband and I looked at each other, and said, "Why on earth don't we get one or two of those?" We live quite close to the water and already have a truck to haul them in/on.But, we've never been kayaking! I have a feeling it is much harder than it looks. We are gonna rent some to see what we think. In the meantime, I'd like your input about what to look for when purchasing used ones, how to tell whether we want one where our legs are "inside" versus on top of the kayak, two-person versus one-person, etc., cost, etc. Thanks for your advice on this one.
Attending the Freedom Swim in Florida--have you ever been kayaking?
Every year on the 4th of July, the community where I live holds "The Freedom Swim" to celebrate our country's birthday. It involves crossing the Peace River, which flows into the gulf of Mexico, by the way. The place where the swim is held is 1 1/2 miles wide. What's fun about this swim is that you can float in a boat, use water toys like noodles to keep you afloat, paddle a kayak, or swim to get across the water. Everyone is having such a good time as they are floating across. They even have coolers tied to big rafts for their beverages, floating alongside them! It's quite festive and there are people of all ages, even in their 80s that take part. There are many boats and water craft drifting quite slowly amongst the "swimmers" in the even anyone gets tired and wants to stop. This is the first year my husband and I have ever gone to see the "swimmers." Now, we want to take part next year! It looked like they were all having a blast! We are going to start shopping around for kayaks and hope to get out on the water a little bit in the next month or so. Have any of you ever been kayaking before? Enlighten me, please.
Back to Reality!
Back to school mode! Everyone seems unegear to leave their provinces. The long strip of white beaches and the cool water of springs and falls have been so tempting. The smoothness of kayaks sailing under mangrooves has been bringing a total relaxation. It's really back to reality - the school rush, the traffic, the pollution, and crimes. The abrupt adjustment has totally wrecked me. An agonizing feeling has enveloped all gimmickries and happenings while on vacation and it is time to face the reality of books, projects and indefatigable activities. Momentarily, life has to go on. We, students have to move on and step ahead to reach our goals. Little by little, we are able to climb the ladders until we reach the top. And only after we finish and find good jobs that we will test what we learned and experienced. Every little thing we acquire while students are essential when we get to work and maximize what our school teach us.
We are going camping this weekend!
I can't wait. We will be going to Natchez State Park in Mississippi for the first time this weekend. The campground is gorgeous with lots of trees and wooded areas. It also has a huge lake surrounding it. We will be able to get the kayaks out and cruise on the lake and get a little sun! Has anyone ever been to this park? Do you like it?
The Magic School Bus
Well my sister is a little odd. Her family, recently bought a school bus and are converting it into a RV. They have redone most of the inside, putting in a sitting area, kitchen, bathroom and sleeping area, it actually looks pretty good. The roof on the inside is painted pale blue with clouds here and there. On the outside it is still a yellow school bus, with the school bus lettering on the front blacked out with spray paint and there is a gigantic roof rack which currently has a small sailboat and a canoe on it. Two kayaks will be joining it soon. So do any of your relatives/friends/coworkers do anything that is odd?
Kayaking provides both good health and good fun
It is one of those gorgeous summer days.the sun brightens the blue skies.the blue gray waters off the beach at Island Lake Recreation Area in Brighton,Michigan, shimmer like liquid crystals.A half dozen women and one man converge at a parking shelter near the lake.they pull their kayaks from inside vans, lift them from atop cars and trucks and attach wheels to help transport them to the shores of Kent Lake beside the boat dock.
trucks
Ok, so we're in the process of looking for a new truck. Not brand new, but probably 2002-2005. It's narrowed down to either a Toyota Tacoma or a Nissan, they look fairly similar quality. Nissans are a bit cheaper. I'd love any opinions on these trucks if you own one, or if you happen to be one of those auto expert types who knows what's good! We don't really need 4x4, but my husband would like it, the truck will mostly be for driving to work and travelling across the province to visit family... We need a truck, not a car, as he kayaks and mountain bikes and uses the back a lot. So what do you think is better, the Tacoma or a Nissan?
